Salmon-Challis National Forest
This vast forest encompasses over 4.3 million acres of central Idaho, including parts of the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness and the Salmon River Mountains. The landscape includes steep canyon systems, high alpine ridges, volcanic plateaus, and the iconic Salmon River. Vegetation ranges from sagebrush steppe to lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, and whitebark pine at higher elevations. Recreation includes rugged backpacking, rafting, hot springs, wildlife viewing, and extensive dispersed camping across remote, high-elevation basins.
